Chancellor Rachel Reeves MP and Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson MP visited St Stephen’s C of E Primary School in Worsley & Eccles to mark the opening of a new school-based nursery, joined by local MP, Michael Wheeler.

The visit highlighted the Labour Government’s investment in early years education, which since July last year has created 4,000 extra nursery places, with 300 new or expanded nurseries opening on school sites across the country.

Michael, MP for Worsley & Eccles, said:

“It was great to join the Chancellor and Education Secretary to St Stephen’s and to show them the difference that school-based nurseries are already making locally. As a parent myself, I know how important it is for families to have affordable, good-quality childcare close to home. These new nurseries not only support working parents but also ensure children get the very best start in life.

“I am proud that St Stephen’s, together with headteacher Mrs Southern, is leading the way, and I look forward to seeing more schools in Worsley & Eccles benefit from new school-based nurseries.”

The new nursery places, combined with an increase in free childcare hours for working parents, form part of this Government’s plan to expand access to childcare and boost opportunities for children across the country.
