On New Year’s Day 2025, residents of South Lane, St Ambrose Road, and St Stephen’s Close were forced to fight rising floodwaters after exceptionally heavy rainfall over the festive period.
Working closely with Astley’s local councillors – Barry Taylor, Christine Roberts, and Paula Wakefield – and local residents, Michael Wheeler MP has brought together all relevant agencies to tackle the ongoing flooding threat and to put long-term solutions in place.
At a recent site meeting earlier this month, Michael ensured that representatives from Wigan Council, United Utilities, and the Forestry Commission were on hand to speak directly with residents, tour the affected areas, and agree on a clear action plan. This includes urgent work to clear gullies and improve the drainage system to divert surface water away from homes.
Michael Wheeler MP said: “Flooding has become an unacceptable worry for too many residents in this area. I am determined to see lasting action taken so that families are not living in fear each time it rains.”
Michael will continue to work with all parties to deliver solutions and ensure the area is better protected in future.
