Michael Wheeler MP has spoken out against Wigan Council’s proposal to remove land off Higher Green Lane, Astley, known as Bridgewater West, from the Green Belt as part of its draft Local Plan (‘Planning for our Future to 2040′).
While recognising the importance of new housing and jobs, Michael is calling for the site to be removed from the plan. He said:
“Astley and Mosley Common have already seen large-scale development without the infrastructure to support it. This site fails to meet the council’s own criteria for releasing Green Belt land and risks further congestion, pressure on public services, and the loss of valued green space. I know how much distress this is causing the local community. I pay tribute to the work being done by local campaigners to raise awareness of the issue, and to encourage everyone to respond to the consultation.”
Key concerns include the lack of clear evidence that the proposed development would meet local housing or business needs, particularly for affordable and social homes. There is also a real risk that it would contribute to urban sprawl between Astley and Boothstown, eroding the distinct character of each area. In addition, the loss of green belt land in this part of the borough appears disproportionate when compared to other areas in Wigan.
Residents can submit their objections until 24th June 2025 by emailing planningpolicy@wigan.gov.uk, writing to Strategic Planning at Wigan Council, Town Hall, Library Street, Wigan WN1 1YN, or by using the Wigan Council planning portal online: Wigan Borough Local Plan: Planning for the Future to 2040
