As the Football Governance Bill advances in the House of Commons, Michael Wheeler MP has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting grassroots football clubs across Worsley & Eccles.

In April 2025, Michael Wheeler MP visited Boothstown FC, a volunteer-run club dedicated to giving young people the chance to play, develop, and thrive through football. Following his visit, he brought an under-10s Boothstown Lizards shirt to Parliament, featuring the names of the players who proudly wear the club’s claret and blue colours each week.

Michael Wheeler MP praised the remarkable impact grassroots football has on the mental and physical wellbeing of young people in the constituency. He highlighted the essential role volunteers play in creating safe, nurturing environments for youth development.

Earlier this year, Michael Wheeler MP also visited Irlam FC, Salford’s only non-league club competing at the highest level of amateur football. He witnessed the club’s ongoing investments, including the installation of a new 4G astroturf pitch designed to enhance training facilities and support local talent development.

Speaking on the importance of these clubs, Michael Wheeler MP said, “Semi-professional and grassroots clubs like Boothstown FC and Irlam FC are vital community institutions. They provide more than just football – they offer connection, growth, and support. Our Labour Government is proud to back these clubs to ensure they continue to thrive and serve our communities.

These visits underscore Michael Wheeler MP’s dedication to fostering sport at every level in Worsley & Eccles and promoting the many benefits it brings to individuals and the community as a whole.
