Worsley & Eccles has taken a significant step in supporting local wildlife with the official opening of Haughton Lane as Europe’s largest ‘Swift Street’. This initiative highlights our community’s strong commitment to conservation and its role in reversing the decline of swift populations across the UK.

The opening event was attended by local residents, representatives from the RSPB, and wildlife presenter Megan McCubbin, who officially unveiled the project. Michael Wheeler MP also joined the celebrations and praised the dedication and community spirit that made the initiative possible.

It’s incredibly inspiring to see people across Worsley & Eccles come together to protect our wildlife,” said Michael Wheeler MP. “Projects like this show how grassroots action can make a real difference, and it’s an honour to represent such passionate and proactive constituents.

Swift populations have been in sharp decline due to habitat loss, but efforts like this provide essential nesting opportunities and raise awareness about the importance of urban conservation. The street now hosts a series of swift nest boxes and educational signage, creating both a haven for wildlife and a source of pride for our community.
